Footpath No.8 - Cradle Lane to County boundary with Surrey

Updated August 2020

This path continues as Surrey FP57 to meet Heath Hill near Great Holt
Note: This path has a stile; the Surrey section has two bridle gates

On the right-hand side of Cradle Lane, going North, and almost opposite where Kingsley FP26 joins, there is a stile with a finger post ...

... pointing vaguely to the left across the side of a hill in a field.  There is usually the vestige of a path to follow, but it is easy to get lost here (speaking from personal experience).
Since the eastern edge of Cradle Lane marks the parish boundary between Kingsley and Headley, we are immediately in Headley parish.  (The boundary of Headley parish in this area is strangely irregular).

The path goes over a field ditch and through a gap in a hedge - all very muddy at times ...

... then proceeds up the left-hand side of an irregular hedge/tree line

At some undefined point it crosses from Hampshire into Surrey and becomes Surrey FP57 - approximately where the hedge/tree line ends at this sturdy old oak tree

After this, the path carries on across the now unseparated field to reach a bridle gate in a hedge

This in turn leads to another bridle gate which exits to Heath Hill (photo in reverse direction).
Note: The house on the left called Great Holt was built on the site of an earlier farmhouse by Boyce Combe (of brewery fame).  During World War II the building was taken over as a girls’ Convent which remained there until the 1980s.  It is now split into separate occupancies.
